singing for our school's 125th founder's day
2012 has been such a fulfilling year for the MGS choir.

In March, we held our annual choir camp during the March school holidays and bid farewell to the Sec4s of batch 2012 in May.

In May, we performed in our school's annual Open House

In July, we sang for our school's 125th founder's day celebration and prefect's installation. Happy 125th birthday, MGS!

Our repertoire also included some folklore ensembles like Lenggang Kangkung & Rasa Sayang and Ting Tan Qin (听弹琴), both by Zechariah Goh, Yagi-Bushi by Ko Matsushita, as well as Buwa-Buwa Ni Utu by John Pamintuan. On top of these, we also sang various Christmas pieces such as Carol of the Bells, Tochter Zion, Canzone dei Zampognari, Il est ne le Divin Enfant, In Dulci Jubilo, Personent Hodie, Silent Night, Deck the Halls, O come all ye Faithful, The First Nowell, God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, and We wish you a Merry Christmas.

After the concert, we flew to Prague to participate in the 22nd International Festival of Advent and Christmas Music 2012, emerging victorious with a Gold for the Folklore Category and as Winners for the Children’s Choir Category.

2015

Dear Diary,

Image result for sea games 2015 opening ceremony2015 was a very eventful year for the choir. We were the recording choir for the 2015 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games’ theme song, “Reach”, and were given the privilege to perform the song alongside Cultural Medallion recipient Mr Dick Lee, the SEA Games Opening Ceremony. The choir was also the recording choir for NDP 2015’s theme song, “Our Singapore”.

Additionally, the choir performed for school events such as Founder’s Day and Prefect’s Installation, and at Performing Arts Night, the choir performed three technically challenging pieces to rave audience responses. Another highlight this year was the opportunity to have an exchange programme with the La Salle College Choir from Hong Kong.

We ended the year with a bang, and managed to clinch two gold awards, 1st in Section B2 Youth category (U24), and 2nd in Section A1 Children’s Category(U16), in the International Federation of Choral Music (IFCM) World Choral Expo Choir Competition held in Macau. During our trip there, we were also blessed with a multitude of new and exciting experiences such as attending several Masterclasses held by renowned , attending several choral concerts and performing in St Lawrence’s Church, one of Macau’s oldest churches and an UNESCO world heritage site. We were also treated to a truly unique experience as we sang al fresco  on the terrace in the University of Macau! It was truly a wonderful conclusion to 2015 for the MGS choir.

2016

Dear Diary,

2016 was truly a year of collaborations and achievements for the MG choir ! With our return from our 2015 Macau trip, we were all in high spirits and started the year off with a collaboration with the boys from Saint Andrew’s Secondary School choir. We were featured in their annual concert and sang “The singing heart” together.

Just the next day, we sang at the MGS Strings concert, and performed “Psalm 90”(which was composed by Mr Tay), with the Strings. The choir performed at school events such as the sports complex opening, Prefects and Student Leaders investiture and Founders Day, and had our annual Cantabile on the 25th of June, 2016. Cantabile this year was extremely memorable, as we performed at SOTA concert hall and celebrated our 70th Anniversary!

2 weeks after Cantabile, we competed in Orientale Concentus, an international choral festival and competition. One of the most memorable moments was when we were told we had won 1st place in our category and were going to perform at the Esplanade for the Grand Prix! We ended up being awarded for the best performance of a Singaporean composition for Ecce Crucem Domini, composed by Mr Tay!
